The seaside resort of Lacanau is one of the most famous on the Gironde coast. Less than 50 km from the city of Bordeaux, this destination suits a solo stay just as well as one with friends or family. Swimming, surfing, cycling trips or culinary evenings, big and small alike will find something to enjoy.

Must-see sights in Lacanau

Here are a few must-do visits.

The Étang de Cousseau Nature Reserve

This is one of the best discoveries to make in Lacanau. This protected area covers 600 hectares. Note that cars are banned in this preserved spot. Only bikes are allowed. With that in mind, cycle paths are available to visitors. If you visit the reserve in summer, make sure to bring a cap and insect repellent. Also remember to stay well hydrated.

The weekly market of Lacanau

Also, if you want to discover local life, don’t miss the weekly market of Lacanau. Very popular with tourists, it’s an event not to be missed under any circumstances. It’s held every Wednesday. It’s best to go around 9am to make the most of the many stalls. We particularly recommend trying the many local specialities, such as the mini-cannelés. They’re sold by the shop M. Cannelé & Mme Macaron.

Restaurant La Cabane

For an unforgettable dinner, you can book an evening at Restaurant La Cabane. This address, located away from the hustle and bustle of the town centre, is very popular. You’ll be intrigued by the original menu. It includes, among other things, crocodile, kangaroo or even zebra.

The Vital Parc Spa

If you want to enjoy a relaxing day in Lacanau, there’s only one address to know: the Vital Parc Spa. They offer a list of various treatments for the face and body. The establishment also has a jacuzzi, a hammam and an aromatherapy room.

Activities to do in Lacanau

To make the most of Lacanau’s natural landscapes, several activities are available to you.

Take a trip to the lake and enjoy the beaches

Indeed, a getaway to the lake is a must. By bike, you’ll ride along the cycle path that ventures into the heart of the dunes. Afterwards, take the time to admire the typical houses that distinguish the area around Moutchic beach. If you visit Lacanau in summer, enjoy a good swim in the Atlantic Ocean. Le Porge Océan, Super Sud beach or even La Grande Escoure beach are absolutely worth discovering.

Try stand-up paddleboarding

The Banana Surf School offers an unusual activity. You’ll discover the ponds’ canal while getting introduced to stand-up paddleboarding. This original outing also includes a culinary getaway. You’ll be able to explore all the richness of local flavours.

Go surfing

A stay in Lacanau is also synonymous with surfing. If you’re travelling with the family, you can enrol your children in one of the many surf schools. Several introductory courses are offered to suit every budget. Not only will they enjoy an incredible adventure, but they’ll also learn how to protect themselves against the dangers of the ocean, such as rip currents. Little ones will also love the Aqualiday water park. They can have fun in the waterfalls, slides and paddling pools over a 5,000 m² area.

For a memorable stay, remember to book at one of the many nature campsites in the Gironde. Indeed, these eco-friendly campsites offer you a new experience, in a privileged natural setting.
