At Mas de la Cam in Saint-Jean-du-Gard, nature takes up most of the land. Of its 65 hectares, only 6 are set aside for camping: the other 60 are left wild, with meadows, tall trees and riverbanks. The Cévennes National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site, begins right outside the estate.
The campsite has chosen a traditional model. No rows of mobile homes or chalets: you pitch your tent or park your caravan under the trees, and the only accommodation is four holiday cottages set in an old farmhouse built in Cévennes stone.
The 4-star campsite has 199 grass pitches of 95 to 140 m² and is open from 12 May to 20 September 2027.
The toilet blocks have been fully renovated, and their hot water comes mainly from solar panels installed on the estate. They include accessible cubicles for people with reduced mobility and baby areas.
If you travel by electric car, the campsite provides three 7.5 kW charging points and one 11 kW point. Once there, the car can stay parked: footpaths start at the end of the alleys.
The restaurant showcases local produce such as Pélardon, the PDO goat’s cheese of the Cévennes. The shop stocks bread and everyday essentials, and the shops of Saint-Jean-du-Gard are 3 km away. A launderette and free Wi-Fi complete the services.
Two hiking trails start right at the campsite. The first climbs 4 km up to the ridges, the second leads to the Col Saint-Pierre, where a viewpoint table at 695 m offers a 360° panorama over the Cévennes valleys. The GR 70, the Stevenson Trail, passes close by, and the municipality has 150 km of waymarked paths.
Cycling is the other way to discover the national park. In July and August, guided rides leave the campsite 4 to 5 times a week, and a map of 150 routes on quiet mountain roads is available at the bar.
Along the way you may spot species reintroduced into the park, such as the griffon vulture, the golden eagle or red deer. In spring and early autumn, the Cévennes flora is at its finest.
