Why we love this campsite

Eco-themed activities
Superb setting by a river and surrounded by wooded hills
Lodge Africa

Overview

Run by Hélène and Sébastien Mervaille, the family is at the helm of Moulin de Serre, a three-star site with 99 pitches on 4 flat hectares beside the Burande river, surrounded by wooded hills near La Bourboule and Mont-Dore. The covered, heated pool, new for 2026, is complemented by a bubble bath and a 20 m² paddling pool for children. The Africa lodge on stilts, built of canvas and wood, sits alongside three-bedroom mobile homes, canvas bungalows and shaded bare pitches in standard or ‘Privilège’ versions. Gold panning, river fishing and hiking shape the stay, complemented by a kids’ club (ages 6-12) and themed evenings (truffade, tartiflette). Awarded the Camping Qualité and Clef Verte labels, the site, open from 18 April to 20 September, nurtures a family atmosphere on a human scale in the Puy-de-Dôme.

    Frequently asked questions FAQ Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes

This campsite doesn't have its own FAQ yet: frequently asked questions about campsites in Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes.

What criteria define an eco-friendly campsite in Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes?
An eco-friendly campsite in Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes is defined by concrete practices such as responsible water and energy management, waste sorting, or blending into the landscape. Some establishments hold recognised environmental labels, while others take a more gradual approach. What matters most is the overall consistency between the natural setting, the facilities on offer, and the commitments genuinely visible on site.
Are nature campsites in Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes really isolated?
Nature campsites in Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes are often located in unspoiled surroundings, close to forests, lakes or mountains. This location can mean a degree of isolation, with limited access to shops or networks. It favours peace and quiet and real disconnection, but it does mean planning ahead for shopping and travel.
What types of accommodation are available at these responsible campsites?
At eco-responsible campsites in Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, you'll find accommodation designed to limit its impact, such as wooden chalets, lodge tents or eco-designed mobile homes. Bare pitches remain common, offering an experience closer to nature. The materials used and how well they blend into the landscape are often key criteria.
How can you recognise a committed campsite without falling for greenwashing?
Recognising an environmentally friendly campsite means looking for concrete, verifiable actions such as labels, transparency about practices, or suitable facilities. Overly general claims with no visible evidence can be a warning sign. Favour establishments that spell out their commitments and day-to-day operations.
Do eco-friendly campsites offer specific activities?
Eco-friendly campsites in Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes favour nature-based activities such as hiking, cycling, or discovering local flora and fauna. Some also offer workshops on the environment or awareness-raising. These activities are usually simple, lightly supervised, and respectful of the natural site.
Can you stay as a family at an eco-responsible campsite?
Staying as a family at an eco-responsible campsite is entirely possible, provided you accept a setting that is sometimes quieter and less equipped than traditional campsites. The facilities may be simpler, but the experience relies more on nature, space and outdoor activities, which suits families looking to disconnect.
What constraints should be expected at a nature campsite?
Staying at a nature campsite involves certain constraints, such as more limited access to electricity or water, strict rules on noise, or hours adapted to the environment. These constraints aim to preserve the site and guarantee a more authentic experience, but they do require adjusting to a different pace.
When is the best time to book an eco-friendly campsite in the region?
The best season runs from spring to autumn, when natural conditions are most favourable. Out of season, some establishments close or reduce their services. School holiday periods remain the busiest, so it's best to book ahead.
